Some areas where Business Coaches and Mentors add value to their clients may include skills training in Business Planning, Formal and Informal Presentation, Marketing, Sales, Public Speaking, Launching, Negotiations, Branding, Team Recruitment and Lead Generation and Conversion, just to name a few.

Business coaches and Mentors help you to learn and apply ideas you wouldn’t have otherwise thought of yourself, however, Business Coaching and Mentoring, while often used interchangeably, are two separate support systems.

As a new start-up looking to learn more, it is important to distinguish that these two relationships will be uniquely different. Coaches, generally have a specific arena of expertise and are specially trained in that arena. For example, when hired by a new business owner, it is to help the owner improve specific skills the coach has expertise in, rather than offer cookie-cutter or blanket advice.

Mentorship relationships usually last for much longer than the typical coaching relationship. Mentors often serve as guides and confidant. Mentors can also be hired to help improve specific skills. It is possible for a coach to eventually step into a mentorship role. Coaching relationships usually start on a formal footing. The less formal mentorship relationship starts in most cases, to give back to a Mentee, often without expectation for payment.

There are multiple unexpected challenges starting and operating a successful business and I believe entrepreneurs need both Business Coaches and Mentors. When considering a coach or a mentor, an individual should ask themselves what they are trying to achieve. A certain amount of clarity will aid personal and professional development.

Ultimately, the coach will provide you with the shorter-term relationship to achieve certain goals, and the mentor will be there over the long term to provide counsel when and if needed.

How do I find a Business Coach or Mentor?

I encourage everyone interested in personal and professional development to look for coaches and mentors. I point everyone who asks me, in the same direction: Who can you think of who is successful in an area where you are trying to grow? Start there and see how you can access that person’s insights — Perhaps it’s through an article like this one, a blog, maybe it’s a book, or they could be just a phone call away. You won’t know until you start looking and asking. No one gets to the top alone. Every master was once a disaster. We all have help. It’s why I have made mentoring such a crucial part of my growth and the growth of our team — and it’s why I mentor and coach people along the way. It is also not at all unusual for long-established business owners and managers to turn to me for improving specific skills even at a late stage in their careers.

It’s the inspiration for my Cost Of Success and Creating A Platinum Lifestyle Mentoring call each month, and the reason I continue to write and speak to audiences around the world. I want to help as many people as possible become all they can be.
